Professional Journey: A Brief

Sebastian Jose reflects on his journey as an architect. He shares, “I started Silpi Architects in 2000. Today, it has been nearly 24 years, and Silpi Architects is one of the largest firms in Cochin, Kerala. We work across various typologies, from residential and commercial to institutional projects.”

He adds, “My association with educational institutions and the exposure I had during my studies gave me a comprehensive understanding of how architectural education can be enhanced. As a practicing architect, I have contributed to over 1,200 projects, served as an office-bearer for the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), the Indian Society of Landscape Architects (ISOLA), and the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), and actively participated in these organizations.”

Starting My Own Business Was the Defining Moment

Sebastian recalls, “Starting my own office was a defining moment for me. Initially, I was the only one in the office, working on small projects. After three or four months, I won a competition for a major institutional project, which became my breakthrough.”

He continues, “Although clients were initially skeptical of our experience, participating in design competitions gave us opportunities. That first big project sustained us for 20 years and became a milestone in my career. Over the years, we won several awards, which motivated us to aim higher and remain competitive.”

Core Values and Philosophy

When asked about his core philosophy, Sebastian shares, “I always work with three core values. First, stay true to the context of the project. Second, be 100% sincere. Third, positively respond to the client’s brief and background. These principles guide my work and help ensure every project is meaningful.”

He emphasizes, “Respecting the region’s climate, understanding the framework of the context, and addressing the client’s requirements are non-negotiable elements in my design approach.”

Dedication, Passion, and Commitment

Sebastian elaborates, “Approach every project with dedication and passion. This mindset fosters a level of commitment that ensures there are no compromises or half-measures. Each project is special, and we strive to add an X factor that enhances its value.”

He adds, “Clients expect something unique from an experienced architect. Whether it’s a small detail or a creative intuition, these elements often make a difference, creating a ‘wow’ factor. As Raj Rewal once said, ‘There is a rasa in architecture, and you have to touch a chord with that space.’ This philosophy resonates with me.”

Challenges in the Journey

Sebastian shares, “As a young architect, it was challenging to get ideal projects. But I gave my best to every project, irrespective of size, to create value and let my work speak for itself. Over the years, I learned to embrace new technologies and trends, ensuring my team delivers the best for our clients.”

Clients Expect an X Factor

On client expectations, Sebastian explains, “Clients often look for a magic touch in architecture. We focus on spatial quality, natural elements, and seamless integration of buildings with the landscape. Each design is context-specific, reflecting the client’s temperament and social background.”

The Fire to Learn and Innovate

Sebastian says, “The fire to learn something new keeps me updated. Continuous learning is essential for architects. I stay inspired by traveling, observing new designs, and exploring visual media like books and magazines. Even small insights can find application later, making the process exciting.”

Being a Responsible Game-Changer

Sebastian advises, “Architects should act responsibly, knowing that their decisions impact future generations. Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s about genuinely integrating sustainable practices into your work.”

Innovations in Building Materials

Sebastian encourages building material vendors to innovate and focus on sustainability. “Every product must offer value while considering the future of our planet. Vendors play a significant role in the industry’s progress.”

The Role of Turnkey Contractors

Sebastian believes turnkey contractors add value by optimizing time and finances for clients. “Contractors must be honest, reduce wastage, and operate efficiently. Every project, big or small, deserves the utmost effort and sincerity.”
