Jitendra Puri shared his professional journey with TBC, he said, I began my journey as an architect in 1999. I worked as Head Interiors in the Firm M/s design & development department for almost 12 years while work I did my masters M-Tech in Construction Management from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
He continues, it was all about a passion in me for creating spaces which not only fulfills clients’ functional leads but also inspires and uplift those who inhabit them. I have always been inspired by interior spaces that look good and increase productivity. Throughout my career I have worked with a diverse range of corporate and commercial projects like offices, restaurants, data centers and institutional projects like schools and universities.
So my journey as an architect has been characterized by the dedication to innovation, creativity and excellence in design. So I always wanted the designs not only to look good but they should contribute to society.
Jiten stated some of his philosophies, he said, I think we all worked with some design philosophies and then we had actually encountered the COVID and post COVID era, during which an important development has happened. All the fit outs, offices, interior spaces got well designed as per the well being of the people and also sustainable.
First, sustainability and wellness is important for design philosophy which prioritizes the use of environmentally friendly materials, energy efficient technologies and design that minimize the negative impact on the planet. And when we talk about the well -being of the occupants. There are measures in place to improve the air quality, indoor conditions.
Second, your designs should have timeless elegance, which means if you design something today but even after Ten- Fifteen years, the elegance of your design should stay the same, although the trends will change, the materials will change.
Third, a very important thing is user centric approach. Ultimately, the client has to use that space. And, If you see our projects, they are actually different from each other. Some of my clients say, you have not added this particular thing in this project. I always tell them, basically though an Architect creats, but the directional force is clients requirements. Whatever my user is going to ask me I will design the space accordingly. So all designs should be user-centric with elegance.
Additionally, functionality also becomes a very important aspect. Attention to details like whenever I visit an interior space, I always see if the details are followed. For example, I always observe when two different materials have been used together, what is the junction detail between the two-Is it a groove, Level Difference or Channel is instered.
So detailing is very important for me as an architect, as an interior designer. So these are a few design philosophies I always believe in while doing any project.
Jiten said quality is the most important aspect which I implemented during my professional journey. He continues, I think every Architect should always have an eye for quality. We are delivering an interior space and delivering an architectural product. So quality assurance processes are very important. How are you reducing your errors and minimizing the rework? How are you delivering a high-quality input? These are the aspects which impact your organization’s efficiency because if your quality is good, you will get repetitive clients.
He further said, I always tell my team to be with time, be with technology. Use modern softwares and do all measures to improve their efficiency. When you do a project, you should ask for feedback from a client, which is actually a process which gives you continuous improvement in the projects to come.
These are some of the things I think which are essential for increasing the efficiency of your organization and proper communication skills. As I stated, if you have a problem, don’t keep it to yourself. You should communicate to the right channel so the problem will get solved because problem solving attitude is very important.
Jiten listed his learnings which he wants to pass on to the same segment that functionality is important but you have to think out of the box keeping innovation and imagination in the profession. Explore unconventional designs and just express your creativity in whatever you do, but not at the cost of the functionality or the aesthetics.
The second thing you have to adopt being an architect is that you should be flexible, adaptive and free to adopt the change in your designs with sustainable practices. Learn to prioritize your relationship with the client because if your relationship with the client is good, you will get a good number of projects. Relationships with clients should be in such a way that every time the client wants to do a project with you only and you should be on his priority list.
Jiten further said that the third and most important thing is, use technological advancements and digital tools to streamline everything. I always encourage there should be a culture of collaboration, you should work as a team and collaborate with other architects in the organization, so everyone can contribute to a design.
Mr. Jitendra said the first challenge nowadays is to fulfill clients’ expectations and to have proper communication. You should be able to understand their needs, able to manage those expectations which can be challenging. Especially when clients have varying levels of knowledge about architectural design as there is social media which acts as a source of information.
According to Mr. Puri another challenge is budget and resource management. Balancing the design aspirations with budget constraints is a common challenge in architectural projects because sometimes clients keep on asking for frequent changes in design and then the project and design loses the essence.
At last, the biggest challenge is that everybody wants to finish before they start on an interior fit out project. Sometimes there are unrealistic project deadlines given by clients is one of the biggest challenges nowadays. They don’t ask when you are starting. They always ask when you are completing the project.
