Ar. Sahana Shetty
Co-Founder & Principal Architect | CoreDesign Architects
As part of our continued effort to spotlight inspiring voices in architecture and design, The Best Creator proudly features Ar. Sahana Shetty, Co-Founder & Principal Architect at CoreDesign Architects, in our latest editorial interview.
From discovering her passion for architecture at a young age to gaining extensive international experience and co-founding a successful practice in Bengaluru, Sahana’s journey reflects creativity, determination, and a deep commitment to thoughtful design.
In this exclusive feature, she shares the experiences that shaped her career, her design philosophy, and the vision behind creating meaningful, timeless spaces.

From a Childhood Blueprint to Building a Global Design Legacy
“I knew I wanted to become an architect as early as the seventh grade.”
For Sahana Shetty, architecture was a dream shaped at home. Watching her father build their family house sparked an early fascination with floor plans, elevations, and the idea of creating meaningful spaces. Even as a child, she eagerly contributed ideas on colors, materials, and design details, unknowingly laying the foundation for her future.
When it came time to choose her career, Sahana remained unwavering. Despite securing admission in Computer Science and facing encouragement to pursue it, she followed her passion and chose architecture instead.
Her professional journey began in Bengaluru before an opportunity took her to Dubai, where she spent nearly 15 years working on large-scale, landmark projects. The international exposure refined her design perspective, strengthened her technical expertise, and shaped her approach to creating impactful spaces.
“Every experience added a new dimension to my understanding of architecture and design.”
Driven by the desire to bring that global experience back home, Sahana returned to Bengaluru and, with her husband, co-founded CoreDesign. For the past nine years, the practice has been delivering thoughtful, context-driven designs that blend international insights with local relevance.
From a young girl inspired by a set of architectural drawings to leading her own design practice, Sahana Shetty’s journey is a testament to the power of following one’s passion with conviction.
Designing Spaces That Stand the Test of Time
Sahana Shetty expressed that successful design goes far beyond creating visually appealing spaces, it begins with understanding the client’s aspirations. She believes that every project should reflect the people who will live or work in it, making the client needs the foundation of every design decision. Sahana added:
“We’re creating spaces for our clients not only for trends.”
Rather than chasing what’s fashionable today, Sahana champions simple, sophisticated, and timeless design. Her philosophy is to create environments that remain relevant for years, allowing spaces to evolve naturally with their users instead of feeling outdated after a short time.
“Great design is built on natural light, ventilation, functionality, and comfort…spaces where people can truly live, breathe, and grow.”
According to her, timeless interiors are not about excess; they are about creating meaningful spaces that continue to inspire, adapt, and enrich everyday life.
Crafting Excellence with Art of Designing with Intention
Sahana Shetty explained that true efficiency is never the primary goal, it is the natural outcome of a design-first mindset. Rather than measuring success by the number of projects or business growth alone, her practice focuses on delivering thoughtful, hands-on design for every assignment.
“We don’t chase efficiency, we immerse ourselves in the process, and efficiency follows.”
She added that as a boutique design firm, the team intentionally undertakes a limited number of projects, ensuring every project receives personal attention and reflects their creative vision instead of being delegated without involvement.
While maintaining this design philosophy, Sahana concluded that the firm has spent the last two years strengthening internal processes, refining workflows, and building standardized systems backed by years of design experience. “The objective is to improve operational efficiency without compromising the quality, creativity, or personal touch that defines our work.”
Listening is the Most Powerful Design Tool
In an insightful conversation with The Best Creators, Sahana Shetty highlighted that the foundation of every successful project lies not in design assumptions, but in understanding people.
She explained that while clients often arrive with a clear idea of what they want, the real requirement often emerges through deeper conversations. Taking time at the beginning of a project to understand a client’s aspirations, lifestyle, context, and functional needs enable designers to create spaces that genuinely support how people live and work.
Sahana emphasized that designers must resist the urge to prioritize personal preferences over client expectations. A space succeeds only when it reflects the user’s needs, enhances functionality, and helps people perform at their best or live their best lives.
She also concluded that staying connected with emerging technologies is becoming equally important. With AI and digital innovations transforming the industry, professionals must continuously learn, adapt, and integrate new tools into their design processes to remain future-ready.
“Empathy, understanding, and technology together will define the next generation of meaningful design.”
Expect the Unexpected and Engineering Creativity through Constraints
“You never truly know what’s hidden behind walls and ceilings until the work begins.”
Sahana Shetty explained that renovation projects often come with unforeseen structural challenges that only surface during execution. What appears seamless in the initial design can quickly change once demolition reveals hidden columns, beams, or existing site constraints.
Rather than letting these surprises derail a project, she believes adaptability is the key to successful design. By anticipating potential challenges and preparing backup solutions in advance, her team ensures that unexpected discoveries are managed efficiently without compromising the design intent or project timeline.
She concluded, “The best way to handle renovations is to expect the unexpected and always be ready with a Plan B.”
When Experience Makes the Difference
Sahana Shetty added that years of handling diverse projects have taught her team to anticipate unforeseen hurdles rather than be surprised by them. Whether it’s delayed vendor deliveries, shipment issues, or last-minute material mismatches, unexpected situations are a natural part of every project.
Instead of reacting under pressure, her team proactively builds buffer time into project schedules, ensuring that these challenges can be addressed without disrupting the overall delivery.
She concluded, “Every project has its uncertainties. The key is to be prepared, stay flexible, and keep moving forward.”
One Team. One Vision. One Seamless Experience.
“Clients value the ease of working with a single team that manages every stage of the project.” Sahana Shetty explained that clients appreciate her firm’s integrated design-and-build approach, where architecture, interiors, and execution come together under one roof. This allows homeowners to rely on one trusted partner from concept to handover, eliminating the hassle of coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
“Having a single point of contact saves our clients time and gives them complete peace of mind.”
She further added that the team’s flexibility and personal involvement make a meaningful difference. By investing extra attention into every project, they ensure the final outcome aligns with the client’s vision and delivers a satisfying experience. Because great design is all about making the entire journey effortless for the client.
Innovation Begins with Curiosity
Sahana Shetty expressed that staying relevant in design is a continuous journey of learning and exploration. From attending industry exhibitions, design talks, and professional forums to discovering emerging materials and global innovations, her team actively invests in knowledge.
“Every Friday is dedicated to learning”
She explained that Friday afternoons are reserved for meeting new vendors, exploring innovative products, and hosting ‘Lunch & Learn’ sessions that dive beyond aesthetics into product performance, applications, and technical understanding. “The best designs come from designers who never stop learning”
When Taking the Biggest Risk Became the Greatest Reward
Leaving behind successful careers in Dubai to return to India after 15 years was the defining moment of Sahana Shetty’s journey. She expressed that choosing certainty would have been easier, but choosing to build something of their own felt more meaningful. “We left everything behind, returned to a place we had been away from for 15 years, and started our practice literally from scratch.”
She concluded that while the decision came with uncertainty and significant risk, it became the turning point that shaped their entrepreneurial journey. Building their practice from the ground up has been one of the most fulfilling experiences, making every challenge worthwhile.
Building More Than a Practice… Building a Shared Vision
Continuing her journey, Sahana Shetty added that taking the leap of faith to return to India gave her and her husband the opportunity to create a practice that truly reflects their shared vision and values.
“Every aspect of our practice has been built by us, for what we believe in”
She explained that the greatest satisfaction comes from doing things their own way while nurturing a workplace where young talent contributes fresh perspectives and creativity. For her, success is about building a culture, a vision, and a legacy they genuinely enjoy shaping every day.
The Future of Design Belongs to Collaborators, Not Competitors
Sahana Shetty concluded that the future of the design industry will be shaped by meaningful collaboration rather than individual competition. She explained that architects, vendors, contractors, and even large and boutique design firms must come together as equal partners to deliver projects more efficiently and creatively.
Every stakeholder has an equally important role in creating exceptional spaces. She further expressed that as AI and emerging technologies redefine the industry, the real opportunity lies in leveraging them to enhance creativity, improve efficiency, and build a better future for everyone.
Strongest Architects Build their Foundation Before their Reputation
“Patience is the strongest foundation every architect can build.” In this exclusive conversation with The Best Creators, Sahana Shetty emphasized that while every generation faces its own unique challenges, architecture is a profession that rewards patience, persistence, and real-world experience, not overnight success.
She explained that aspiring architects should invest time in learning the craft by working on-site, understanding construction processes, strengthening technical expertise, and gaining practical business knowledge lessons that extend far beyond the classroom.
“The early years are where your foundation is built. The stronger your foundation, the further your career will go.”
Sahana concluded that while information is easily accessible today, nothing can replace hands-on experience, and those who embrace the learning process with patience will create lasting success in the profession.
Trust is the Strongest Building Material
Sahana Shetty explained that the strongest partnerships are built not on products alone, but on trust, reliability, and long-term commitment.
“Architects don’t just look for suppliers… they look for partners they can rely on throughout the project.”
She expressed that while delivering a quality product is essential, what truly differentiates a building material brand is its ability to stand beside architects from concept to completion. Consistent support, dependable execution, honoring commitments, and being available even after delivery create lasting confidence.
According to her, price may influence a decision, but trust, service, and reliability build enduring relationships. When architects know they can depend on a partner to solve challenges and deliver on every promise, that partnership naturally becomes the preferred choice for future projects.
Quality isn’t an Option. It’s the Foundation of Every Great Project
Sahana Shetty emphasized that turnkey contractors should never compromise on quality in pursuit of speed or cost savings. According to her, delivering a project that performs flawlessly over time creates far greater value than simply meeting deadlines.
She explained that quality begins with the mindset of the entire team. Every worker, supervisor, and stakeholder must share the responsibility of executing every detail with precision instead of choosing the easiest path. “Every corner, every finish, every detail matters.”
Sahana concluded that when every individual is committed to delivering excellence, the entire construction industry moves to a higher standard where trust, craftsmanship, and lasting client satisfaction become the true benchmarks of success.
Leadership Begins with Standing Behind Your Team
Sahana Shetty explained that true leadership is built on trust, accountability, and putting people first. She believes that every team member contributes to a project’s success, making it essential for leaders to ensure they have the right support, guidance, and confidence to perform at their best.
“A leader’s greatest responsibility is to stand by the team through every success, every challenge, and every setback.”
According to her, leadership is about taking ownership, creating a culture of security, and ensuring every individual knows they are never facing challenges alone.
Wrap-Up
From following a childhood dream to building a design practice rooted in purpose, Sahana Shetty’s journey is a powerful reminder that great architecture is created with passion, patience, empathy, and continuous learning. Her insights reinforce that timeless design is never driven by trends alone, but by understanding people, embracing innovation, fostering collaboration, and delivering with unwavering integrity.
As the design industry continues to evolve, Sahana’s vision serves as an inspiration for architects, designers, and industry professionals alike, proving that the most enduring spaces are built not just with materials, but with trust, curiosity, and a commitment to creating meaningful experiences.
